An Overview

Auburn has the largest overseas born population of any LGA in NSW with more than 66.2% of residents speaking a language other than English at home; has the highest percentage of new arrivals from refugee backgrounds per capita than any other LGA in NSW; and is the second most disadvantaged LGA in NSW.

ACDN’s core work of community development addresses the above data and this is reflected overwhelmingly in the community groups and individuals who access the activities and programs of ACDN. ACDN has a long and successful history of almost 35 years advocating for the needs of communities in Auburn and has made sustainable contributions in the area of developing community services and empowering marginalized communities. ACDN has been crucial in carving Auburn on the social Australian map assisting in the development and establishment of significant and current organisations and community events such as the Auburn Asian Welfare Centre, Auburn Youth Centre, Auburn Migrant Resource Centre (now known as Auburn Diversity Services Inc.) and Auburn Festival.

ACDN continues today to work collaboratively with other services through joint projects, and provides support and resources to other groups to facilitate the development of new community infrastructures.

ACDN programs have emerged from consultations with local communities and ongoing evaluation which have identified youth, arts and cultural and community development as important tools in developing the capacities of individuals, groups and communities, and in fostering participation and creative engagement. ACDN’s community development initiatives include community awareness, education and advocacy, social research and planning, service development and capacity building with other services.

Established in 1975 under the Australian Assistance Plan, Auburn Community Development Network Inc. (ACDN) has been incorporated as a not-for-profit community based organisation since 1986 and is a registered charity organisation.

Managed by a volunteer Management Committee, ACDN is primarily funded by the NSW Department of Community Services
(DOCS) and Arts NSW and also receives additional financial and in kind support from numerous other agencies.
