Project Description

Auburn Markets Initiative

SECOND SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH AT AUBURN CENTRAL • 10AM - 3PM

Auburn Community Development Network (ACDN), a local community organisation in partnership with Auburn Council, is exploring the feasibility of establishing regular markets in the Auburn town centre.

Using a community development process, the Auburn Markets will showcase the unique diversity of skills of the local area by providing a space for community members to come together to sell a range of locally made and imported products. This initiative will also support a program of cultural arts activities and performances in the Auburn Local Government Area.

This initiative aims to:

  • Develop and support the establishment of pilot markets in Auburn.
  • Empower and build strong communities by building the capacity of markets stallholders through training in areas such as (creative/unique) product development, pricing, small business and marketing skills, food handling, health and safety, and through building support networks.
  • Support entrepreneurship and promote business and learning opportunities and local job growth

The markets are in line with Auburn Council’s Strategic Plan: Auburn 2030 to support entrepreneurship and promote business and learning opportunities and local job growth.

The initiative will work with existing groups such as local artists, crafts people, small business owners including members of new and emerging communities from disadvantaged and emerging CALD communities to develop business opportunities, expand the skills and knowledge base of community members and to support the formation of self-organised structures such as co-operatives. The goal is that the Auburn Markets will eventually be run and owned by the local community.

Auburn Markets will also focus on key cultural events and celebrations in the local community as a basis for providing a diverse program of cultural arts and performances in the LGA as part of the markets.

By creating a sustainable market where the stall holders develop a sense of ownership and in their promotion of their cultural arts, crafts, food and performances, the Auburn Markets will provide a community meeting space and a sense of belonging.
To support and advise ACDN for the duration of the project, the manager has appointed a steering committee comprising of representatives from around Auburn LGA and Greater Western Sydney.
